Antiplatelet medicines

Clinical studies have found that people who have had a heart attack or stroke benefit from antiplatelet medicines like aspirin and clopidogrel.

  • These medicines thin the blood and prevent blood clotting problems, but they may increase the risk of bleeding slightly.
  • The Antithrombotic Treatment Trialists’ (ATT) Collaboration combined the results of 22 reliable clinical studies of antiplatelet medicines, which involved more than 100,000 people.
  • Overall, these medicines do more good than harm for people without brain haemorrhage, so they are used in standard medical practice to prevent blood clots.
